The Epworth Sleepiness Scale© (ESS) is a tool used to assess the risk of sleep apnea. The ESS was developed in 1990 by Dr. Murray Johns of the Sleep Disorders Unit Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. This scale is the most frequently-used method worldwide for assessing a patient’s average level of daytime sleepiness and their risk for obstructive sleep apnea.
If you are experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, please make an appointment with River Valley Dental so that we may help you to properly analyze your ESS results and discuss your sleep habits. Today there are many effective treatments (including dental treatments such as oral appliance therapy) for excessive sleepiness, sleep apnea, and snoring. Our dentists are experts in dental treatments for sleep disorders.
